Every 200 notes I wake up to, I see some familiar faces and learn that some of you just have this post ON STANDBY to remind yourselves not to whale for the new bland twink.
Proud of you guys
Our username system makes it difficult for folks fluent in other languages to express themselves. That's why we're moving to a system like the one on Twitter, where every Asian artist forced to get an alphanumeric username has a handle like @bc2931a or @2023jx or @wabababxa_, which is very easy to remember and shows how versatile alphanumeric handles are at expressing one's non-English-speaking self
I suspect the real reason for the change is nothing like "people were having a hard time adding their friends" or "oh noes PhiBi has over 9999 people so the next PhiBi will need to be Phi-Bi. George will need to be George-with-an-e. Jane may need to add her middle name."
I suspect that (1) their database may be having problems with non-alphanumeric names; (2) the nazis using cyrillic letters (etc.) to get around filters have a lot of slurs in names that are hard to track down; (3) the combination of "change your username anytime but keep your number" and "nitro lets you change your number," makes it hard to track down scammers who change both parts regularly.
...I think they'd get a lot more acceptance if they just said "actually the current name system is causing security problems and the only fix is to have permanent names." (...There is no particular need for those permanent names to be limited to 37 characters - a-z, 0-9, _ and .)
I wonder if they realize that people will be name-squatting and attempting to auction off high-value names.
